Is neurofeedback safe and noninvasive?
Neurofeedback is noninvasive and is generally considered low risk when provided by a properly trained clinician.
During neurofeedback, sensors placed on the scalp measure brainwave activity. The sensors do not deliver electricity into the brain or change the brain directly. Instead, a computer provides real-time visual or auditory feedback that helps the brain practice different patterns of regulation. Some people may experience temporary effects such as fatigue, headache, irritability, dizziness or changes in sleep.
Mountain Haven Pathways personalizes and monitors each training plan, and clients should share any concerns or changes they notice during care.
What happens during a neurofeedback session?
Sensors measure brainwave activity while you receive real-time feedback through a computer-based activity.
At the beginning of a session, sensors are gently placed on specific areas of the scalp and, when needed, the ears. There are sensors placed on specific training locations on the scalp depending on the protocol, and the ear clilps are always placed as reference wires. These sensors record brainwave activity without delivering electrical stimulation. As you watch a video, listen to audio or participate in another computer-based activity, the program responds to changes in brain activity and provides immediate feedback. In-office brain-training sessions at Mountain Haven Pathways generally last approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the training plan.
How many neurofeedback sessions may be recommended?
The number of sessions varies based on the individual, their goals and how they respond to training.
Neurofeedback is typically completed as a series rather than a single session. Many training plans may involve approximately 20 to 40 sessions, but some clients may need fewer or more. Beth develops recommendations after reviewing the client’s history, goals, initial assessment and qEEG brain map when applicable. Progress is monitored throughout training so recommendations can be adjusted when appropriate. Results and timelines vary, and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.
Can children and teens receive neurofeedback?
Yes. Neurofeedback can be adapted for children and teens when it is appropriate for their needs and developmental level.
Neurofeedback is noninvasive and does not require a child to talk throughout the session. Many children and teens can participate by watching a video or engaging with another form of computer-based feedback while sensors measure brainwave activity. Beth brings extensive counseling experience with children and adolescents, including foster and adoptive children and children who have experienced trauma or other difficult circumstances. An initial consultation and assessment help determine whether neurofeedback may be an appropriate option.
Can therapy and neurofeedback be used together?
Yes. Therapy and neurofeedback may be used independently or together as part of a personalized care plan.
Therapy helps clients explore experiences, emotions, thoughts and behaviors while developing practical coping and relationship skills. Neurofeedback uses real-time brainwave feedback to support the brain’s ability to practice more regulated patterns. When appropriate, combining these approaches may provide both relational support and brain-based training. Beth works with each client to determine whether therapy, neurofeedback or a combination of services best fits their needs and goals.
“My brain training session with Beth was very relaxing. Afterwards, I worked hard in my garden and slept like a baby that night. I woke up feeling energized from sleep rather than feeling like I needed an hour on the couch just to wake up.“
